CONINCO experts share Occupation Orientation with Urban Engineering students of National University of Civil Engineering

On Saturday, December 10, 2016, at the Room 404.H1 – National University of Civil Engineering, the Urban Engineering Specializing, under the Training Program of High Quality Engineers (PFIEV-EGC) organized the talk show of "Occupation Orientation for Urban Engineering students". Dr. Arch. Luong Thi Ngoc Huyen - Director of CONINCO Research Center of Science, Technology and Training and MSc., Infrastructure Engineer Nguyen Van Binh - staffs of Consultant and Inspection Joint Stock Company of Construction Technology and Equipment - CONINCO were the speakers in the talk show.

Attending the meeting, there were Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai – Head of Urban Engineering Specializing (PFIEV-EGC), Dr. Tong Ngoc Tu - Deputy Head of Urban Planning Specializing, MSc. Lai Thi Ngoc Diep - Urban Planning Specializing and MSc. Ho Van Tuan - Secretary of the Inter-union, Committee of High Quality Engineers together with all students of course 57 and 58 in Urban Engineering.

During the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Van Binh shared his experiences during his study and practical work. As an undergraduate student in Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Architecture, Mr. Binh had excellent academic achievements, won the second prize in Loa Thanh (2009) with the topic "Flood prevention solution for Hoi An city" . Challenging with the difficult, complex and relatively new topic, Mr. Binh actively explored, learned more from specialized books, exchanged with the teachers and experts leading in the specialize. Therefore, the knowledge developed from his graduation project helped him a lot in practical work later on. "The knowledge learned from the university is classic background, the basis for practicing" as stated by Mr. Binh. Hence, students while studying should not waste time, lightweight subjects in the university. If an engineer has good theoretical knowledge, it will be easy to grasp the work in an overview and it is not too difficult to explore for further work.

After graduating, Mr. Binh has been actively involved in a variety of jobs, from design, construction, supervision and now he has been working as a supervision consultant, design consultant and businessman. He said that it is not necessary for us to worry too much about which job will be suitable for the undergraduate or choose the type of job before graduation. Because all jobs are related and complementary each other. For example, a good designer easily handles construction situation and vice versa, who has experience in construction will choose the design solution more effective and practical. However, the speaker also noted that the choice of a design consultant will be more favorable because the design requires expertise and high-tech, it is the transition between the learned theory and the construction practice.

Mr. Binh stated that Urban Engineering or Infrastructure Engineering was a good, integrated and increasingly important role for urban construction in Vietnam and in the world. Infrastructure engineers, in addition to their knowledge of technical infrastructure (water supply, sewerage, electricity, etc.) must improve the knowledge of structural work to help with the technical infrastructure such as manhole, tuynel, ... He believed that with the advanced training program of France, on the basis of industry integration, the engineers of Urban Engineering – National University of Civil Engineering would have more synthesized and fundamental knowledge than this specialized program in some other universities. Infrastructure student would study all areas, from basic subjects, basic subjects to specialized knowledge. They had the access to all the knowledge of a civil engineer, traffic engineer, infrastructure engineer, planners and also project and policy managers. In particular, Mr. Binh was very impressed with the Mini-Project of Situation Analysis and Mini-Project of Urban Practice. This is a sectoral synthesis mini-project of 2 semesters (the 2nd semester of the 4th year and the 1 semester of 5th year) related to a wide variety of specializations. These two projects also specify the actual implementation of the project (preliminary investment preparation). With such overview training, the urban engineering students would have easy access to their future project management or urban management.

Discussing the recruitment in companies, Mr. Binh advised the students not to worry much about academic transcripts. However, the good learning outcomes will determine the person's morale, attitudes and dedication, and earnestness in the future. Therefore, there are three criteria in recruitment to be paid attention to: knowledge, skills and attitude, in which the working attitude is the highest rated (about 70%). Therefore, students must have a sense of serious working attitude right from the beginning of studying. This is reflected in the active participation in classes, actively exploring and learning knowledge related to the subject, having a sense of responsibility in the teamwork, ...

At the end of the talk show, Mr. Nguyen Van Binh emphasized that in order to be successful in their career, students need to have enthusiasm, responsibility, love and trust in their chosen career. Therefore, they can seriously prepare their a career plan in the future with the greatest effort.
