After 10 months since groundbreaking, the Terminal T3 - Tan Son Nhat Airport (HCMC) project has achieved 100% of the rough construction volume, reaching 60% of the total project output, exceeding the set schedule. This is one of the projects of particular importance to the development of Vietnam's aviation industry. Upon completion and commissioning, the project, along with the Long Thanh Airport project, will form a powerful, modern port cluster, with the potential to become one of the major aviation centers in the region, boosting the competitiveness of Vietnam's aviation industry on its path to international integration. The Ho Chi Minh City branch of Consultant and Inspection Joint Stock Company of construction technology and equipment - CONINCO is the unit currently directly supervising the project.
Currently, at the project site, machinery and equipment are operating non-stop with approximately 2,500 engineers and workers taking advantage of the dry weather to expedite construction to put the project into operation by April 30th, 2025 (two months ahead of schedule).
The construction project of Terminal T3 - Tan Son Nhat Airport consists of 4 main items: Passenger Terminal, High-Rise Parking Garage combined with Non-Aviation Services, Apron System in front of the Terminal, and Aircraft Parking Area. The Passenger Terminal has a scale of 1 basement and 4 floors above ground, with a total construction floor area of 112,500 m2. The terminal has a linear design similar to the existing terminal, divided into 2 separate departure and arrival levels, with 90 traditional check-in counters, 20 automatic bag-drop counters, and 42 self-service kiosks, 27 aircraft gates (including 13 jetway gates and 14 bus gates), 6 luggage handling islands for departures, and 10 luggage handling islands for arrivals, 25 security checkpoints for passengers. It is note-worthy that Terminal T3 is designed with 8 security checkpoints and a separate VIP area serving VIP, business-class, and priority passengers. Currently, the terminal has completed 100% of the structural work, 15 days ahead of schedule.
Additionally, the 2-basement, 4-floor parking structure component has also reached 96% of the structural work and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024. Alongside the main construction items, many supporting components such as the 3-story mechanical and electrical building, wastewater treatment plant, and elevated walkways have also reached 100% of the structural work. The 4,730 square meter aircraft parking apron has completed the first layer of concrete pouring, reaching 89% progress, ensuring the timeline.
Given the nature of concurrent operations and construction, as well as the site being located within an urban area and military zone, the key challenges in implementing the Terminal T3 - Tan Son Nhat Airport project include the limited construction site space, lack of a dedicated access road, and height restrictions on cranes. Therefore, the contractors have had to apply modern scientific methods and develop reasonable construction plans to avoid impacting the surrounding military facilities and the operating airport, while ensuring the quality and timely completion of the project.
As an experienced aviation construction supervision consultant, to ensure the project's schedule and quality, the CONINCO engineering team always closely coordinates with the Project Management Board, regularly assessing and urging the construction units, following up on each component, and working with workers on site in the spirit of "overcoming heat and rain, eating and sleeping hurriedly, working three shifts and four teams, and continuously during holidays and Tet" to complete the project by April 30th, 2025, as required by the Government.
The T3 Passenger Terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport has a total investment of over 10,900 billion VND, and after completion, will be a domestic passenger terminal with a capacity of over 20 million passengers per year, capable of serving all Code C and Code E aircraft. The project is also being implemented concurrently with traffic connection lines invested by Ho Chi Minh City to reduce traffic congestion around Tan Son Nhat Airport.
